翻開亞洲建築師花名冊,杰弗裡·巴瓦(Geoffrey Bawa)是一個無法繞開的名字。他是斯里蘭卡最多產和最具影響力的建築師,被譽為“斯里蘭卡之光”。在斯里蘭卡,巴瓦設計越來越成為一道道不可錯過的風景。
巴瓦是個大器晚成的建築師,1919年出生於斯里蘭卡,年輕時曾經就讀於英國劍橋大學法學院,畢業後原應和父親一樣成為人人稱羨的律師。然而,在他27歲獨自踏上為期一年半的世界旅行之後,突然有了想要創作屬於自己的建築的慾望,於是在將近30歲時,重新前往英國學習建築。在巴瓦38歲(1957)時終於有了他的第一個作品,從此以後,他開啟了其遲到的建築創作生涯,直到2003年84歲過世為止。四十餘年的實踐,巴瓦成功地為自己的祖國斯里蘭卡創造了一系列革命性的建築原型,因此另外馬來西亞建築師楊經文所言:“對我們許多建築師而言,杰弗裡·巴瓦將始終在我們的心目中佔有特殊之處,他是我們首位英雄,也是我們首位宗師。
他的建築作品是斯里蘭卡傳統和現代相結合的樣板建築,自成體系,從歐美現代建築的角度來看,雖然採用現代建築的手法,卻沒有太多刻板的教條。的空間特質,大膽地將許多工藝品,織布,民俗家具,雕塑,水池,植栽,岩石等元素安排在建築中,可以說開啟了亞洲現代建築中“混搭”(Mashup)的風格。這種風格的形成肯定和巴瓦個人的多國混血背景有相當大的關係

Day 2
早餐後前往丹布拉的 Heritance Kandalama 遺產坎達拉瑪酒店。途中參觀丹布拉洞穴寺 Dambulla Cave Temple
【丹布勒石窟寺】它是斯里蘭卡最為著名的石窟寺,擁有2000年的歷史。寺內共有五座石窟,150尊佛像形態各異,雕刻精美,2100平方米的壁畫現在色彩艷麗,最為難得。
位於斯里蘭卡世界文化遺產“丹布拉石窟寺”邊的酒店,建築隱藏於森林深處,前往的道路兩側都是熱帶雨林。行進中忽見岩壁上有一長溜的建築妥帖地樹立,可是路一轉,卻又不見了踪影,到了近前才能一觀究竟,這就是“ Heritance Kandalama hotel”
它曾被美國國家地理雜誌推薦為世界50家最好的酒店之一;被CNN評選為世界上最佳環保酒店之一;被21GreenGlobe美國環保組織選為環保酒店,成為美國以外第一間獲得此榮譽的酒店;同時在2000年獲得了LEED認證,也是亞洲區第一間獲得21世紀綠色標章的建築,世界第一間獲“ LEED”認證的酒店。酒店的設計師便是斯里蘭卡國寶級建築師杰弗裡·巴瓦(Geoffrey Bawa)。

Day 3
After breakfast visit and climb the 5th Century Rock Fortress in Sigiriya (UNESCO World Heritage Site) considered by some as the 8th wonder of the world for its architectural marvels and the advanced water management system. The ‘Lion Rock’ is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 meters from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens including the renowned water gardens ring the base of the rock Visit the world-renowned frescoes of the ‘Heavenly Maidens’ of Sigiriya, which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway. These frescoes are painted in earth pigments on plaster.
Thereafter proceed to Polonnaruwa, (UNESCO World Heritage Site) which was the 2nd capital city of Sri Lanka, built in the 11th and 12th centuries AD, and which is a world heritage site. Here you can see the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Gal Viharaya where 4 splendid statues of the Buddha in ‘Upright’, ‘Sedentary’ and ‘Recumbent’ postures carved out of rock, the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath, king Parakramabahu’s statue, and the Parakrama Samudraya Lake built by King Parakramabahu the great.

Day 4
After breakfast transfer to Kandy (UNESCO World Heritage Site) the last Kingdom of Sri Lanka before being colonized by the British.
Enroute visit the Matale Heritage Centre, which draws on the rich craft traditions of the area, producing quality batik, embroidery, carpentry and brasswork. It occupies a sprawling compound of bungalows, workshops and gardens.
On arrival in Kandy visit the Temple of the Tooth, the ancient King’s Palace building, council chamber and other buildings still preserved in its original form, dating back to the 15th century.

Day 5
After breakfast leave for Tangalle . En route visit the Bandarawela Chapel of the Good Shepherd’s Convent (designed with Mr. Ulrik Plesner). Bandarawela Chapel was constructed by using granite for the structure
From the hills of Bandarawela descend to Tangalle on the coast . On arrival in Tangalle, check in to the Last House, which is the last property built by Geoffrey Bawa in Sri Lanka. This luxury seaside escape’s airy, antique-filled interiors spill into al fresco spaces as if no boundaries exist.
Thereafter visit Fitzherbert House, which is now known as Claughton House, in Dickwella (approximately 30 minutes). This too is a great work of Bawa’s.

Day 6
KANDY / TANGALLE / GALLE
Drive this morning to the colonial city of Galle (approximately 2 hours). En route, drop by another of Bawa’s works – the Ruhunu University Campus and the Matara Office building.

Check-in to the Jetwing Lighthouse, an architectural triumph of Geoffrey Bawa, where you will be spending the night.
In the afternoon, enjoy some sightseeing in Galle Fort. Its rich heritage is derived from the colonial influences of the Portuguese, Dutch and the British respectively, spanning four centuries. The town’s centrepiece is the Dutch Fort, around which the city is built. The Fort remains a hive of activity and is one of the few World Heritage listed sites in which a bustling population continues to thrive

Day 7
After breakfast, drive to Bentota (approximately 2 hours), visiting Heritance Ahungalla en route, where Bawa created features such as interconnecting expanses of water leading the guest into the hotel.
Also visit the boutique hotel, Club Villa, a 19th century Dutch Colonial villa re-designed by Bawa in 1980
For afternoon tea, visit Geoffrey Bawa’s country residence Lunuganga where you will find that nature has been incorporated in the very design of the house.Experience Lunuganga the local residence and lifetime creation of Mr. Bawa. Guided tour will be conducted in the property.
Then proceed to Ibbankatuwa a "Megalithic" Burial site, spread in an area of more than 10 acres. See more than 10 graves excavated and conserved.

Day 8
After breakfast , take the scenic coastal train heading to Colombo. Colombo City Tour
Then visit Number 11, the residence of Geoffrey Bawa. and Parliament building designed by Mr. Bawa
Dinner at The Gallery Cafe.
Established in 1998 Paradise Road The Gallery Café is housed in the former offices of world-renowned Sri Lankan architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa.
